065: Tales from the Road & New Adventures Ahead

Today’s podcast features a conversation about my recent travels, teaching, and some new adventures.

Here are some photos from the surface design class I taught:

And here is Carol Anne Grotrian talking to us about how to critique quilts.

The two quilts in the photo are both hers — two variations on the same idea, one more successful than the other.

During the Workshop, there was a team of women stretching all the Ruby Red Quilts onto canvases.  You can see my little owl on the table:

Most of the quilts had a red background, so I’m thinking my white-on-white background is going to pop in the big group of them.  I’m super excited to see them all together!

Last but not least, I mention “Bullet Journaling” in the podcast.  If you don’t know what that is, this a great article all about it: WTF is a Bullet Journal & Why Should You Start One?  An Explainer.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. HI Julie and your Mom,
Yes you are very lucky to have a great mom like you have.
Loved this pod cast and always look forward to hearing the next one.
I heard all about your HSN adventure. Yes you are selling the scan n cut to the first time buyer or the one that has maybe never seen anything like it and have a need for it.
several years ago I had never seen or heard of this machine. With that said I know I did see an infomercial with you on tv. At that point I was interested in it but forgot all about it.
2 years ago by fluke I just happen to turn HSN on. There you where the Lady with that machine. I watched and knew by time the segment was over that I had a purpose for it and that I would buy it.
I did I bought the big Mommy of the scan and cut of that time. My purpose was to cut out fabric and to make my own patterns out of paper for cutting and sewing fabric. I have and I did. I needed to make tea cup bags or containers with a zippered top for my tea cup collection. I have made them. This was my first project for my scan n cut.
I did both ways cutting the paper pattern and also cutting out the fabric with my scan n cut to sew together. Mission accomplished.

The one thing I do not like about HSN is that the hour of the morning they put you on. I do not know how many viewers are up at 3-4 in the morning. They do not give you enough time and no phone calls.
The benefits to me for the scan n cut are
    1. If you like to sew but cannot follow the cut line on a pattern and end up with jagged or uneven cuts. The scan n cut can cut out things much better then I can.
2.If you do not like to pay a big price for a tissue pattern and want to use it more then one or two times. You can recreate it in the scan n cut.
    3. If you are not good at measuring and making a size that you want by hand. you can do it in the scan n cut.
    4. If you can no longer draw like me then you have the scan n cut.
    5. If you go out of the lines when coloring you can color in the scan n cut.
I am not a paper crafter per say. With the scan n cut I am going in that direction. Greeting cards, designs, sentiments etc etc Scan n cut.
I have a similar Bullet journal, diary, to do list, recipes, calendar, planner and other things. 250 pages worth that I made up with my computer.
Personally I see you as a professional with tons of knowledge, insight and fortitude.
Loved the pod cast. I also checked out your vlog and found it so nice to be with you on your trip. Loved the yoga segment.
Loved the quilt guild your owl did stand out among the rest.
Have a great day and yes it will be hot before we know it.

  2. I just want to say….I love listening to your podcasts and vlog! I’ve had your blog on my feed for quite a while but last week while making a bunch of quilts for a charity, decided to watch your vlog and must admit to binge-watching many of them while sewing. And then I moved on to the podcasts where I’m catching up now. Wow, just love listening to you and your mom. Your adventures are always interesting and you really have a way of telling a story that keeps my attention. Have never been able to listen to books on tape or anything like that because things have to be visual. Guess after watching the vlog I could relate much better to the podcasts. Anyway, thanks for doing these. Hope that someday you teach out here on the left coast–should say, Pacific Northwest. We have a great Modern Quilt Guild in Portland, BTW.
