081: Listener Mail

Mom and I are doing our best to get back into the podcast swing of things.  We’ve been podcasting since 2012 (6 YEARS!!!) but we’re not great about frequency.  This will be just our sixth podcast in 2018.  (Note to self: put podcast in calendar as a “to do.”)  All of that said, today’s podcast is a particularly good one, because it’s a conversation with YOU! We chose a few of the awesome comments you’ve left to share and discuss.

Mom and I would also love it if you would take a few minutes to take this four question survey about the podcast and why you do or don’t listen to it.  Should take you less than one minute to complete.

Thank you for your time!

Finally, a quick reminder that I’ve got a bunch of teaching gigs coming up:

September 22-23: I’ll be at The Ink Pad in NYC.

Saturday is “Interesting Faces” where I’ll be sharing my techniques and ideas for creating truly unique faces.  It’s time to play beyond the edges of your imagination!

3-TwoEyesFloral-wm
Sunday is “Painted Paper Collage.”  In this class I’ll be sharing some of the techniques that I use over and over for projects big and small, including this fabulous collaged dress:

October 13-14: ScanNCut for Artists in the Boston area

I’m super excited to be teaching an in-person ScanNCut class.  This is the first one I’ve taught that is open to the public and it is focused on using the ScanNCut as an art tool to make stamps, stencils, screens, and more!

November 2-4: co-teaching a 3-day class with Nat Kalbach in the UK

Nat and I are both so psyched to take you through the process of creating mixed media collages from two different perspectives.  I think it’s going to be an amazing class!

I hope to see you in class!  Thanks for stopping by!

079: Time & Perspective

For the first time in podcast history, Mom and I are in the same room to record this episode of the Adventures in Arting Podcast!  I wonder if there’s any difference in how the podcast feels?  You’ll have to let me know!

As mentioned on the podcast, I’ve got a bunch of teaching gigs coming up:

I hope to see you in class!

076: Creativation 2018

I recently attended Creativation — the annual trade show for the craft industry.  It used to be called CHA (craft and hobby association) and now it’s called Creativation.  And the organization, which also used to be called CHA, is now called AFCI.  Here are a few photos from booth set-up:

Creativation was a whirlwind of interviews…

And new Art Foamies (they weren’t at the show, but I demo-ed my new stamps in the Pin It Canada booth):

And then all the fun stuff to see on the show floor:

I think you can see the trends in these photos:

  • home decor
  • decorative painting
  • brush lettering
  • florals
  • florals on a dark background
  • rustic look
  • painting on wood
  • wood & metal
  • fabric & stitch elements
  • lots of color

As I mention in the podcast, I did some poking around for Make It Artsy, and handed out these silly postcards about the show:

Tomorrow I’ll be sharing an in-depth look at the wall I made for Brother using the ScanNCut and DesignNCut!

Next week some projects made with the PTouch Embellish, plus lots of stencil and stamp info.  **AND** I’m going to be doing TWO livestreams on YouTube with stencil and stamp giveaways!

Foamies
Saturday, February 3 at 2pm EST I will be sharing all of my new Art Foamies as well as some Art Foamies techniques.  I’ll also be answering Art Foamies questions and giving Art Foamies away!  It’s going to be a super fun Art Foamies party!

Stencils
Monday, February 5 at 9pm EST I will be sharing all of my new stencil designs!  Of course there will also be stencil techniques, a huge stencil giveaway, and I’ll be answering your stencil questions!

Livestreams are 100% free and can be found on my YouTube channel.

Side Note: I was delighted to be a “Creativation VIP” this year.  You can see the page about me here.

067: Still Younger Than Mom ;)

Today’s podcast features a conversation about the Nari Ward opening at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), Art in Bloom at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), my prize winning painting, and more!  I will be sharing some long blog posts with lots of photos of the ICA Opening and the Art in Bloom stuff in the upcoming weeks, but if you’d like to peek at them in the meantime, you can see them in this week’s vlog:

Here is a photo of my painting that won first prize in the oil/acrylic category at the Watertown Art Association show:

We’re going to be doing a “listener mail” episode soon, so please leave us your comments and questions!

065: Tales from the Road & New Adventures Ahead

Today’s podcast features a conversation about my recent travels, teaching, and some new adventures.

Here are some photos from the surface design class I taught:

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Adventures in Arting Podcast

And here is Carol Anne Grotrian talking to us about how to critique quilts.

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Adventures in Arting Podcast

The two quilts in the photo are both hers — two variations on the same idea, one more successful than the other.

During the Workshop, there was a team of women stretching all the Ruby Red Quilts onto canvases.  You can see my little owl on the table:

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Adventures in Arting Podcast

Most of the quilts had a red background, so I’m thinking my white-on-white background is going to pop in the big group of them.  I’m super excited to see them all together!

Last but not least, I mention “Bullet Journaling” in the podcast.  If you don’t know what that is, this a great article all about it: WTF is a Bullet Journal & Why Should You Start One?  An Explainer.
