012: Going to Museums

I’m delighted to bring you another episode of the Adventures in Arting Podcast!  Today we’re switching things up a bit.  Instead of having a guest, Mom and I are chatting about museums.  We discuss visiting museums with children, what is a museum, favorite museum experiences, and even wander into some questions of the value of certain art.

I wanted to share a resource guide in this post to some of the museums and artwork we discuss on the podcast.

  1. I really enjoyed today’s show. I live in NYC and my favorite museums are El Museo del Barrio and Natural History. I find that I connect with museums that tell a story. For example, I could not get into the Guggenheim. Tried it twice. But it wasn’t for me. In reference to “negative” art, I totally get where you are coming from. I immediately thought of Diego Rivera in contrast to his wife Frida Kahlo. I love them both but I can never bring myself to hang Frida’s art. I admire her and I have studied her as a historical figure. But I have Diego’s flower market scenes framed and ready to hang. I had an opportunity in hs to visit the Louvre but all I wanted to see was the famous stuff: Mona, David, Venue de Milo, and the Last Supper. After that I was done. LOL. Thanks for the show. Your format and topic areas are really interesting and I am enjoying the podcast.

  2. Julie thanks to you and your wise mother. I truly enjoyed this going to museums podcast.
Your mother had some very insightful comments regarding what museums are all about and what the curators job is in pulling and exhibit together. I loved her comments in what we can gain by being open minded and our experience at the museum. I will have to go to my museum more ofter with another set of eyes now and not try to see everything at once and think about the what and why of what I see. Thank you for your time and effort with these podcasts, I just love them

  3. The topic of taking children to art museums when they’re young reminded me of when we took our then-7-year-old daughter to the National Gallery a couple of years ago. My husband and I love the Impressionists and really enjoyed seeing some old favorites in a particular exhibit. Gabi was prostrate with boredom. But when we went into the modern art building, all of a sudden she was engaged with the art. In retrospect, it made sense that the interesting shapes of Calder’s mobile sculptures, the bright colors of Matisse’s huge wall-sized Composition with Masks, and the abandon of Jackson Pollock would be more accessible. (I made a layout about this: https://bookworm.typepad.com/lens/2012/08/woyww-167-whats-on-your-workdesk-wednesday.html)

  4. Thank you Julie and Mom! It was lovely to be able to listen in to your conversation, I can only imagine what your family dinners are like. Too much fun! Absolutely, a collection of art tells a story. I think we respond depending on our frame of mind at the time. I do think there is an important place for art, including film, to provoke and challenge us. We need to have a safe place, like art, in which to experience a good range of emotions, to help us build our capacity to deal with all emotions. This will make us stronger, and more complete individuals. Coming to NYC in July, and can’t wait to see some museums. Any I must not miss? Cheers

  5. I am so glad I popped over here today and listened to this episode – it was very interesting. A friend and I have started planning an inspiration day once a month. So far we have gone to the arboretum and spent a day at a local park, however we decided next month we would go to one of the many museums in Dallas. I know now I’ll see it with different eyes . . . and will bring a sketch book along! I also appreciate your insight about getting a membership to the museum and will be doing some research on our local museum memberships. Thanks for a great episode!
